Update 0 : Eternal Return

W A K E  U P  . . .

After some small amount of prompting from friends and family, as well as continued interest on the part of the internet, I have decided to return to the world of "Lips Like Velum" in order to spruce it up but also generally just keep it going. I've learned a lot in the past year that I think I could apply to remaking and re-imagining my original conceit of "L.L.V.", and given that I have the basic framework for its development set-up I believe that finishing it would just be a matter of good planning and good creative decisions. For all these reasons and more, I am making "Velum Children".

This being the first update (or even less than the first update, hence Update 0), I don't have a lot to offer in the way of new stuff or, uh, updates. I wanted to make this post thought to christen this new project. That's not entirely true though, as I have been tinkering with the graphics of "L.L.V." and have now put together a general visual aesthetic that I think will serve me well in creating the rest of the content. I'm going for a sort of "toasted pixel" look that is a combination of dithering algorithms in Asesprite (https://www.aseprite.org/) which is where I do almost all my art + graphics and some not-so-subtle noise shaders that run in the actual game.  I think it looks pretty good so far. Judge for yourself, in this fabulous cropped screenshot:

The Man At The Window

I think my first real update will be going more in-depth about my goals in creating these visuals and also how I intend to go about doing them. I'd consider myself "competent" when it comes to my game's graphics in that most of the time I can get a look that pleases me (I hope it pleases you too)

I mention on the "Velum Children" game page that I intend to make this "bigger and better" and I really do mean that. I developed "Lips" when working towards the goal of submitting it for a game jam. I knew less than I do now about the tools of game development I have chosen and also about, I think, what just makes a game feel good to play (and also fun to play!). I definitely will be reusing some assets I think I put together well the first time, but anything that isn't up to snuff I will be altering or throwing out. In some ways I'm glad I never put a cap on "Lips" because now I have the chance to remake it even better.

I think that's probably enough for now. I intend to write the piece on graphics very soon though. Thanks for reading, see you soon. <3
